πβ The Disappearance of Charles L. Alper βπ

Charles L. Alper, a 28-year-old resident of Narragansett, Rhode Island, disappeared at sea on March 4, 2011, after going overboard from a commercial fishing vessel off the coast of Galilee. Although authorities later concluded that his disappearance was the result of an intentional act, his body was never recovered, and he remains lost at sea.
Charles was described as having brown hair and blue eyes. On the morning of March 4, he was aboard the Karen Elizabeth, a 78-foot commercial fishing vessel, operating approximately one mile northeast of Galilee near Point Judith. According to investigators, Charles went overboard at sea around 9:30 a.m. Witness accounts and evidence gathered during the investigation indicated that he had intentionally entered the water and had reportedly taken nautical items with him to weigh himself down. He was not wearing a life jacket.
After crew members realized what had happened, an emergency distress call was placed to the United States Coast Guard. A large-scale search-and-rescue operation was launched immediately. The Coast Guard deployed an HH-60 rescue helicopter, a 45-foot rescue vessel from Coast Guard Station Castle Hill, and a 25-foot rescue boat from Coast Guard Station Point Judith. In addition, a Rhode Island State Police dive team assisted in the effort, using sonar equipment to search beneath the surface.
Despite an extensive search of the surrounding waters, no trace of Charles was found. The operation continued through difficult conditions, including frigid water temperatures estimated at just 34 degrees Fahrenheit. Search efforts were suspended Friday night and officially called off the following day after authorities determined that the likelihood of survival was extremely low.
Following the investigation, law enforcement officials stated that evidence suggested Charles’s disappearance was intentional. His death was ultimately ruled a suicide. However, because his remains were never recovered, the sea continues to hold the final answers surrounding his last moments.
Today, Charles L. Alper is remembered as a man who vanished beneath the cold waters off the Rhode Island coast, leaving behind a tragic and haunting case of a life lost at sea. π―οΈ
