💙🧸 STILL MISSING: Where Is Shane Walker? 💔🕊️

On August 10, 1989, 19-month-old Shane Walker disappeared from the playground at the Martin Luther King Jr. Towers in Harlem, Manhattan, New York. More than three decades have passed, yet his family has never stopped searching, never stopped hoping, and never stopped loving the little boy who vanished without a trace.

Shane was just a toddler, standing about 3 feet tall and weighing 23 pounds. He had beautiful black hair that his mother lovingly braided into a ponytail, warm brown eyes, a small scar beneath his chin, and a birthmark on the back of his right shoulder. On the day he disappeared, he was wearing a blue and white striped shirt, light blue pants, and white LA Gear sneakers. He was also being treated for an ear infection and had previously suffered seizures when running a high fever.

To his mother, Rosa Glover, Shane was nothing short of a miracle. After believing she would never be able to have children, she finally welcomed the son she had always dreamed of. She called him her “special boy.” She adored every little thing about him, especially his long braided hair, and promised herself she wouldn’t cut it until he turned two years old. Tragically, she never got the chance.

That warm summer afternoon, Rosa did what she often did on her days off from work—she took Shane to the neighborhood playground. Before arriving, she stopped at a store and bought him a bag of chips to enjoy while they sat together at the park. As they entered, a young girl and her little brother repeatedly asked if they could play with Shane. Rosa was hesitant and initially said no because he was so young, but after they insisted several times, she finally agreed while keeping watch from a nearby bench.

Moments later, a stranger sat beside Rosa and began an unsettling conversation. He talked about crime in the neighborhood and suddenly mentioned kidnappings, telling her that “things happen to children.” He then showed her scars he claimed were from past fights. For only a brief moment, Rosa looked away to glance at the scars. When she turned back toward the playground, Shane was gone.

Panic set in instantly. Rosa ran through the playground screaming her son’s name, desperately searching every corner. Just minutes later, the two children who had been playing with Shane returned through a hole in the playground fence—but Shane was not with them. They claimed they had simply left him in the park. Rosa knew that couldn’t be true. If they had left him there, he would still have been there. Instead, her precious little boy had vanished.

Police responded immediately, launching an enormous search involving nearly 200 officers, helicopters, search dogs, building-by-building searches, rooftops, basements, garbage chutes, sewers, abandoned buildings, and countless interviews. Every possible lead was investigated, but no trace of Shane was ever found. There was no ransom demand, no confirmed sighting, and no explanation for how a toddler could disappear so completely.

Even more haunting was the discovery that only three months earlier, another Black toddler, two-year-old Christopher Dansby, had vanished from the exact same playground. Both boys lived in the same apartment complex, disappeared on a Thursday evening during the summer, were last seen in the same area of the park, and had reportedly been playing with the same two children shortly before disappearing. Investigators explored whether the cases were connected, but despite years of investigation, no definitive answers have ever been found.

Authorities questioned everyone connected to Shane’s disappearance, including the children who last played with him, their parents, the man who distracted Rosa, and Shane’s own family members. They also searched for an unidentified light-skinned Black man, estimated to be between 19 and 24 years old, about 5’8″ tall, wearing a yellow shirt and acid-washed jeans, who was reportedly seen with a little boy matching Shane’s description later that evening. Despite exhaustive efforts, investigators were never able to connect anyone to Shane’s disappearance.

Over the years, detectives considered numerous possibilities, including the involvement of a serial child abductor, a child trafficking operation, or an illegal baby-selling ring. They investigated every theory they could, but none produced the evidence needed to solve the case. Shane’s disappearance remains one of New York City’s most heartbreaking unsolved mysteries.

Despite unimaginable pain, Rosa has never given up hope. She survived breast cancer twice while continuing to believe her son is still out there somewhere. She has often said that if Shane walked through her door today, she would hug him, kiss him, and take him on a vacation just to make up for the decades they lost together. She still dreams that one day he will discover who he really is and find his way back home.

If Shane was abducted and raised under another identity, he may not know his true name or the family who has spent more than 35 years searching for him. Advances in DNA technology have reunited families in cases once thought impossible to solve. If you were born around 1988 or 1989 and have questions about your identity or your past, a DNA test could uncover answers that have remained hidden for decades.

Someone knows what happened to Shane Walker. Someone remembers that summer day in Harlem. Even the smallest piece of information could finally give his family the answers they have waited a lifetime to hear.

If you have any information about Shane Walker’s disappearance, please contact the New York Police Department at 646-610-6914 or the New York Housing Police Department at 212-410-8500.

Please continue to share Shane’s story. As long as people remember his name, there is still hope that one day he can be brought home.
