On November 25, 1991, 11 year old Mark Himebaugh lived with his mother and older brother in Del Haven, NJ and was a 6th grader at Cape May County Alternative Middle School. He was last seen walking towards a playground in the County Park, nearby to his home. The last person to see him was a park guard, claiming it was about 4:00 that afternoon. Mark was wearing a blue U.S.N sweatshirt, a gray jacket with a red blue and gray plaid lining and four outer pockets with velcro, a pair of gray docker pants and red and white sneakers. Mark’s mother Maureen told her son she was dropping off a neighbor to pick up their car at a repair shop in Middle Township. He did not want to go along because a fire had broken out in town and he wanted to watch what was happening a quarter mile away. By the time Maureen had finished her errand around 40 minutes later, her son was gone. At the time, Maureen assumed Mark was with neighborhood children, however he was never heard from again. His mother reported him missing at about 5:00 PM that evening after she still could not locate her son. Of note, the afternoon of his disappearance, traffic was rerouted past their house. 

Mark’s left foot was healing from a fracture at the time of his disappearance. He was also taking the antidepressant medication Prozac for his behavioral problems. Mark is classified as emotionally disturbed and he may have OCD. He frequently had tantrums and angry outbursts as a result of his conditions, but his behavior had been improving prior to his disappearance with the help of his meds and therapy. He had a habit of biting his fingernails and is right handed. He is a caucasain male, with blue eyes and red hair with freckles across his body. He was 4’6, 85 lbs.

There are unconfirmed reports from witnesses stating that Mark was seen at the entrance of a local park with an unidentified young girl at about 3:40 P.M. on the day Mark vanished. Her identity is still unknown. She was about 9 or 10 years old in 1991 with dishwater blonde colored hair. She was about 4 ft tall and 70 to 75 lbs. Wearing a dark blue ski parka that had a hunter orange stripe on the back. Police believe this girl has information about Mark’s disappearance, below is a sketch of what she looked like.

Two other men were also reported to have been seen with Mark on the day of his disappearance. One man was said to be 30 to 35 years old, ‘5’8 – ‘5’9 and about 150 lbs. He had dark reddish brown hair in a ponytail and had a scruffy, unkempt appearance. Below is a sketch. There is no available description of the other male.

Investigators did locate Mark’s left shoe, a hand-me-down L.A Gear sneaker at Sunray Beach approx. 75 yards from the family home later in the day of his disappearance. His footprints were also seen above the tide line, but these were the only solid clues ever found.

In 1993, A man named Thomas Butcavage Jr. was named as a person of interest in Mark’s disappearance. He resembled the sketch of the man Mark may have been seen with. A male prostitute named Daniel Coll approached the police and said that Butcavage was one of his regular clients and had shown him a video of himself having sex with a young boy who resembled Mark. The boy was handcuffed, gagged and appeared frightened. The prostitute asked Butcavage if the boy was Mark Himebaugh and Butcavage said it was. He also said he deliberately planted Mark’s sneaker on the beach to confuse the investigation. 

Butcavage has not been charged in Mark’s case but he has been imprisoned multiple times for drug offences and for sex with underage males. In 2015, authorities asked anyone who knew Butcavage in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s to please come forward.

Mark is believed to have been abducted by a stranger. The case is still unsolved. Mark’s mother has kept unopened gifts for Mark and still uses the same phone number in case her son might one day be found alive.

The Murdered Wendy Wolin

This case has a lot of information so this will be an extensive write-up. 

  Wendy Wolin Fleischner was a 7 year old girl living in Elizabeth, Union County New Jersey on Irvington Avenue with her mother, Shirley Fleischner. On Tuesday, March 8, 1966 at 4 p.m, the mother and daughter planned to leave their Pierce Manor apartment to run errands and pick up Wendy’s older sister Jodi from Hebrew school. Shirley told her daughter to meet her at the corner of Irvington Avenue and Prince Street while she got her car from the back parking lot. As Wendy made her way to the corner, a man approached her, crouched down and stabbed her in the stomach, through her coat, with a knife. As Wendy fell to the ground and cried out in pain, the man kept on walking in the opposite direction. A few witnesses to this, three little girls, ran into the fire department across the street and told Director Edward F. Deignan what had just happened. The 7 year old was taken to the fire station. When police showed up and realized Wendy was bleeding, they rushed her to Elizabeth General Hospital where she passed away due to shock and hemorrhage from a punctured liver, shortly before 5 p.m. 
Witnesses who had been there stated the man who stabbed Wendy was 6 feet tall, wearing a green/grey/blue Fedora, a corduroy coat, and tan baggy trousers. His weapon was a hunting knife and it was later found at the scene. 
The police launched a massive search for the perpetrator, said to have been a white male in his mid-to-late-40s with pale skin, white hair and a muscular frame, about 220 pounds. He was also said to walk with a “stiff leg.” As officers searched door to door, it left no results to the man’s identity. Thousands of people were questioned, including a “boat load of Vietnam-bound troops aboard a ship in the Port of Elizabeth Harbor.” Trains and buses were boarded and searched. Police Chief Michael Roy happened to look similar to the apparent attacker, so he agreed to let makeup artists lighten his complexion and whiten his hair so a picture of him could be used for Wanted Posters to be distributed. A special phone line was installed to handle the tips that poured in from other potential eyewitnesses and concerned citizens. 
Still, the killer was never found. 
It is speculated that the killer was the same man who had attacked two other girls earlier on that same day. 10 year old Patricia Lavolpe had been wounded on the buttocks by a man with a sharp object. She was also rushed to the Elizabeth General Hospital, fortunately she made a full recovery. 45 minutes before this attack, a 12 year old girl named Diana De Nicola was struck in the face by a man while standing in front of a department store. She too was then taken to the Elizabeth General Hospital, suffering from a bruised right cheek and eyelid. She too made a full recovery. 
As time went on, there were several tips and numerous suspects that were thoroughly investigated. In 1995, a tip was received by a woman who stated she had seen something which had turned out to be significant in the investigation. She said she assumed it was a piece of information that was no longer relevant since so much time had passed. The woman named a suspect, however he had already been questioned. This tip caused an outpour of other phone calls from people with potential information. Investigators encouraged any of the original witnesses to please come forward so they could be shown photos of the new potential suspects to see if they were identifiable. 
The Union County Crime Stoppers Program offered a reward of $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of Wendy’s killer. 
Sadly, all new leads did not pan out. This man was never identified. Police believe that the only way they will receive any closure for Wendy’s family is if a deathbed confession occurs. Otherwise, they have little hope of ever finding her killer. 
In 2016, as per the 50th anniversary of this incident, the site where she was attacked was used as a memorial to Wendy. 
The Elizabeth Police Captain, Todd Mooney, decided to post on social media about Wendy’s murder to pay tribute for the anniversary. He included a composite sketch of the suspected killer. Someone responded, they did recognize the face, but not in connection with Wendy. It involved the killing of another littler girl in the neighboring Highland Park, the year before Wendy’s murder, in 1965. 
A woman named Beth Moroney notified investigators that she is certain she saw Wendy’s killer on her block, the day her neighbor, 11 year old Mae Rubenstein, was stabbed more than a dozen times inside their home on South 3rd Avenue in February of 1965. Mae’s mother was also murdered by the unknown intruder after catching him in the act of killing her daughter. Beth said that right after the killing she described the man to police but there was never a follow up and no composite sketch. She still wonders whether Wendy’s death could have been prevented if police had taken her seriously. Authorities have never made an official connection. 
Eventually, there were even more bizarre coincidences established in the two cases. When the Rubenstein’s were killed, Wendy and her sister Jodi lived one block away in Highland Park in their grandparents house. Strangely enough, the grandparents last name was Rubenstien, but there was no relation to the murdered mother and daughter. 
Jodi Wolin now reveals that her mother suddenly moved the girls to Elizabeth just 11 days after the Rubensteins died, with no reason given. Jodi also stated that she had never heard of the Rubensteins murder until Facebook. A theory of mistaken identity was brought to light. Jodi also informed investigators that her grandfather did owe money to the mob and other powerful people. 
In 2016, DNA from Wendy’s coat was being tested but Mr. Todd Mooney said the evidence is so degraded, it will likely not produce any results. 
There was no DNA to use in the Rubensteins case because the blood at the scene was cleaned up very early on in the investigation. 
As of January of 2021, both of these cases are still unsolved.

The Murdered Joanne Fantazier

On Thursday, February 10, 1966, 17 year old Joanne Fantazier left her home at 612 Florida Grove Road in Perth Amboy at 6:30PM to visit a friend. She was last seen walking past the Delaney-Dunlap housing projects near her home. One article did say she made it to her friends’ house, but I can’t confirm. The next day, February 11, her body was discovered on the frozen Yellow Brook in Colts Neck Township. It seemed that Joanne had been hit over the head from behind and thrown from the nearby Muhlenbrink Road bridge, (a 12 foot drop) still alive and unconscious before she died on the ice about two hours later. Her cause of death was a brain hemorrhage due to blunt force trauma to the back of the head and hypothermia, along with the trauma she endured when her body hit the ice.
Joanne was fully clothed, but her high heel leather shoes were missing. She was wearing a red dress with a raccoon fur coat. There was no evidence of sexual assault. Joanne’s purse with personal items and papers were found by the side of the road. There were no other clues found.
Two months after her death, a man by the name of James E. Hartnett was briefly held as a material witness. No details were released. Joanne’s murder had previously been attributed to a serial killer in NJ but it doesn’t seem that this serial killer ever existed. (see below, source #2 and #3) No further information has been released, and Joanne’s murder is still unsolved.

The Missing Betty Smith

Betty Fran Smith was last seen on October 1, 1991 in West Windsor, New Jersey. People usually called her by her middle name, Fran. She was married to a man named John David Smith III at the time of her disappearance. Her maiden name was Gladdon. They met in Niceville, Florida in 1990 and got married later the same year. In January of 1991, John filed for divorce from Betty, however, the couple reconciled and then decided to move to New Jersey in May. According to Betty’s family, John seemed mild-mannered prior to her disappearance, but they later learned he was abusing Betty. (Picture of John down below)
Betty called her daughter at 8:30am, on October 4, 1991 from their residence in West Windsor Township. Betty gave no indication that anything was amiss and did not mention any travel plans. She recently had surgery to fix a broken hip, which would make traveling difficult. Betty has never been heard from again. John told Betty’s family he believed she went on some sort of impromptu trip. Her relatives did not believe him and began to investigate her disappearance themselves. They learned that John had previously been married to a woman named Janice Hartman Smith from 1970 to 1974, while he told Betty’s family that their marriage was his first. As it turns out, the first wife, Janice, vanished from Ohio in 1974, which was just a few days after the finalization of her and John’s divorce. John reported Janice missing two days later, Janice’s case remained unsolved until 2000. (Picture of Janice below)
John had not been charged in connection with either of his wives’ disappearances in the 1990’s and he moved to California after Betty vanished. In 1998, he married for a third time.
Janice’s remains were located in an Indiana roadside ditch in 1980, 6 years after she was last seen, but she remained unidentified until 2000. John, who by then had already moved to California, was charged with aggravated murder in Janice’s case in the fall of 2000. His new wife supported him at first, but eventually filed for divorce and got a restraining order shortly before his arrest. She learned about John’s abusive background and the disappearances of his first two wives. John was finally found guilty of Janice’s murder in 2001, sentenced to 15 years to life and is currently incarcerated in Ohio.
Foul play is suspected in Betty’s disappearance due to who is involved. John isn’t charged with anything in her case, but he was found liable for her wrongful death in a civil suit in 2002 and was ordered to pay $1 million to her family. Betty has never been located. It is unlikely that her family will be able to collect it.
The FBI is attempting to identify two women pictured in photos found in John’s collection at the time of his 2000 arrest. Investigators would like to figure out the women’s whereabouts, given John’s history. (Pictures below)

The Missing Bonita Krummel

Bonita “Bonnie” Louise Krummel was 44 years old, living in Medford, Burlington County, New Jersey when she went missing on January 23, 1991. She is Caucasian, brown hair and blue eyes, her height and weight are 5’1, and 103 pounds, last seen wearing a dark gray and white tweed jacket, an off-white or cream colored sweatshirt, maroon corduroy pants, L.A Gear sneakers and a gold heart necklace. Her ears are pierced and she has a scar on her abdomen from an appendix removal, and she also had a healed fractured right forearm. Bonnie suffers from Huntington’s Disease, a degenerative genetic condition that causes uncontrollable random movements, loss of muscle control, impaired cognitive abilities, mental illness and eventual death. She had this disease for seven years by the time she disappeared, and was also suffering from insomnia and difficulty swallowing in 1991. She was taking medications to slow the progress of the illness, since Huntington’s is incurable.
Bonita was last seen leaving her home on Hadley Drive in Medford on January 23, 1991. She told her family that she would be back in time for dinner, but she never returned and hasn’t been heard from since. Her husband reported her missing at 9:30 p.m. The very next day, her vehicle was parked at the Pinelands Library on South Main Street, which is approx. 5 miles from where she resided. Bonita’s keys, I.D, purse, credit cards, money, watch and wedding ring were left inside the car, along with a note that stated “I am sorry that it had to come to this but I can’t go on another minute. Love you all. Bonnie.”
Search dogs tracked her scent to a nearby lake, however her sister did not believe she would have drowned herself because Bonnie knew how to swim and she didn’t like to get dirty. (I am not sure whether or not the lake was ever searched by a dive team.) Bonita’s family does believe however, that she left on her own to spare them from having to watch her die slowly from her Huntington’s Disease, and it is also of note that several of Bonnie’s family members including her mother had passed away from the same illness.
Authorities are unsure what happened to her, but they don’t believe foul play was involved.
Her case remains unsolved.

The Missing Patricia Depunte

  Patricia Depunte or Patty as friends often called her, a 32 year old beautician from Pleasantville, New Jersey was last seen on March 18, 1990. She was reported missing to the Atlantic City Police Department. She is between 4’8 – 4’11, 95 lbs, blonde hair and blue eyes. Last seen wearing a white shirt with blue jeans and high heels. One source I found stated she may have also been wearing a jade ring. 

On March 17th, 1990, Patricia went to a place called the Irish Pub on St. James Place in Atlantic City, near the boardwalk. While inside, she was seen arguing with two females as she was sitting next to a Caucasain man in his early 30’s. She then asked this man for a ride home and was seen leaving the pub with him sometime between 2:00 and 3:00AM. The man was identified (and it turned out he was married) and his car was impounded for a forensic inspection. This man stated that he dropped Patty off a few blocks away from the pub at 3AM in the pouring rain. (sources vary on the exact time and location Patty was supposedly dropped off at, one article reads that she was dropped off 3 blocks south of the pub, while another source states she was dropped off half a block from her apartment. I have linked both articles below.)

Patricia was born on April 14, 1957, she grew up in Pleasantville, and graduated from Pleasantville Highschool. She was single but an outgoing person, and she occasionally drank heavily. However, she was responsible at her job and kept in regular contact with family. 

Her case is still unsolved.

Circumstances: On May 4, 1984, the victim was found in the Passaic River in Newark, New Jersey.

(Just to better understand the summary, the difference between Hyperpigmentation and Hypopigmentation is HYPER means the scar is darker than the rest of the skin, and HYPO means the scar is lighter than the surrounding skin.)
Jewelry: Silver colored ring with the letter Y, gold colored ring with 21 white colored stones, gold colored ring, black colored rubber ring.
Circumstances: The victim was found on September 14, 1984 in East Orange New Jersey.
